Opening Day Checklist for Data-Driven Snowboarders
Nov 5, 2024 · SnowboardTracks.com
Opening day is one of the most exciting days in a snowboarder's calendar — and for data-focused riders, it's also the most important setup day of the entire season. Getting your tracking configuration right on day one means your data will be comparable across the entire season. Here's the complete pre-season and opening-day checklist for riders who take their data seriously.
Two Weeks Before Opening Day
Check that your GPS device firmware is up to date. Firmware updates often include GNSS accuracy improvements and bug fixes that can meaningfully improve tracking quality. If you're using a smartphone app, update the app and review your settings to confirm GPS recording frequency and accuracy mode are configured correctly. Set your season goals in your tracking platform and create your baseline segment library for your home resort.
One Week Before
Charge all devices fully and test GPS acquisition. A cold GPS receiver that hasn't been used in months sometimes needs a longer cold-start acquisition time. Take your watch or phone outside for 10 minutes and confirm it's acquiring satellites correctly. Check that your data backup and sync settings are configured so your session data automatically backs up to the cloud.
The Night Before
Check snow conditions and grooming reports for your target resort. Review your route plans for the morning session. Charge all devices overnight — battery temperature matters, so don't leave devices in a cold car overnight. Keep batteries warm for optimal first-run performance.
Opening Day Morning
Start your GPS device or app outside the lodge to allow satellite acquisition while you're getting ready. Note the time you started the device so you can trim the pre-session waiting time from your data later. On your first run, ride normally and check mid-run that data is actually recording before going further. Nothing is more frustrating than realizing after a great first day that you weren't recording.
After Your First Session
Review your opening day data while it's fresh. Note any segments or routes that you want to track consistently throughout the season. Backup your raw GPS files to a secondary location. Update your baseline performance metrics. You're ready for the season.
